The shaft coupling is the flexible part that is used as the mechanical connection between the driving shaft and the encoder shaft.
A coupling can provide either a rigid or a flexible connection ; flexibility permits misalignment of the connected shafts or provides a torsionally flexible connection, reducing the effects of shock. It also allows increased bearing life, while the torsional rigidity allows higher accuracy.

The selection of the correct coupling will ensure both optimum mechanical operation of the encoder and high accuracy.

The acceptance test report which is supplied with each encoder records the encoder accuracy with the coupling included.
